A motorhome is a big purchase, and a 20 minute test drive does not tell you how it feels to cook, sleep and pack up in one. Try Before You Buy lets you find out properly.

How it works

1. Pick the motorhome you are serious about, in Auckland or Christchurch.
2. Pay a $3,000 refundable deposit by bank transfer.
3. Take it away for two nights. We walk you through the water, power, gas and toilet before you leave.
4. Bring it back and decide.

What happens to your deposit

• You buy it: the full $3,000 is credited to the purchase.
• You decide not to: the deposit is refunded, less the cost of the two-night hire.
• You cancel before the hire starts: the deposit is fully refunded.

What to test in two nights

• Make up every bed and sleep in the one you would use most.
• Cook a real meal, then do the dishes.
• Use the shower and toilet, and empty the cassette.
• Spend a night off power and see how the batteries hold up.
• Drive a hill, a motorway and a narrow street.
• Pack your gear and check the storage.

Keep a list of anything you notice. If you go ahead, those items can go on your Pre-Purchase Make Good Agreement.

Where to go

From Christchurch, Lake Tekapo and Kaikoura are both easy first trips. From Auckland, the Coromandel and Raglan are within a few hours. Short distances leave time to actually live in the vehicle.

Is the deposit really refundable? Yes. It is credited in full if you buy, and refunded less the two-night hire if you do not.
