More visitors and returning Kiwis now buy a motorhome instead of renting one for a long trip. If you are overseas, you can choose, secure and prepare a motorhome or campervan before you land. Here is how it works with Getaway.
1. Shortlist online
Browse our stock and send us the plates you are interested in. We reply with photos, the odometer reading with its date, the self-containment status and the service history for each one.
2. Get it inspected without being here
We welcome an independent inspection, and you can book one from overseas. We can also do a detailed walk-around on video so you see what the inspector sees. Anything found goes into a written Pre-Purchase Make Good Agreement before you commit.
3. Secure it with a deposit
A $3,000 refundable deposit holds the vehicle. It is paid by bank transfer only, with your surname and the plate as the reference. We confirm account details in writing on the sale agreement. If a payment request ever looks different, call us before you pay.
4. We store it free until you arrive
Overseas buyers get free storage until collection. The motorhome sits at our Auckland or Christchurch yard, and it can move between the two after your deposit, so you can collect at whichever end of the country you land.
5. Collect and hit the road
At handover we take you through the water, gas, power and toilet systems, and you leave with at least 6 months COF and 6 months registration. Ownership is transferred with NZ Transport Agency on the day.
Driving in NZ on an overseas licence
You can drive in NZ on a current overseas licence for up to 12 months from arrival. If it is not in English, carry an approved translation or an International Driving Permit. Check the NZ Transport Agency site before you travel.
Insurance
We can introduce you to Covi or Star Insurance for cover from the day you collect. We only pass on your details with your consent.
What we do not offer
To keep it clear up front: we do not offer buy backs, trade-ins or rent to buy. When your trip ends, you sell the motorhome privately or through a dealer of your choice.
FAQ
Can I buy without seeing it in person? Yes. Use an independent inspection and our video walk-around, and nothing is final until you sign.
How long can you store it? Storage is free for overseas buyers until you collect. Tell us your arrival date when you pay the deposit.
Which branch should I collect from? Whichever is closer to your arrival airport. We can move the vehicle between Auckland and Christchurch.
